This is a hard one to review for me. I did like this book and would rate it like 3.5 stars.

The beginning of the book started out really strong. However, at about 40% things didn't really add up.
She is a trained fae captain and says she has been trained to fight since a very young age. However, she is held captive by a human captain, she gets free and doesn't run away.... what ...
The human captain and his friends give in way too fast to just accepting her.
The romance was there but went way too fast.
The king mentions in his pov he wants to name his daughter heir but doesn't and than lets his wife treat her like shit....

I loved the story, but it went too fast, with some things that just didn't make sense to me

WOW

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Sooo good!
From the prologue I was absolutely hooked.

Elianna is a badas* FMC! The king has a heart of gold, while the Queen is pure evil. The proclaimed heir to the throne is just as evil as his mother. Jace the enemy commander though.

This book hooked me really fast in the beginning!

The story starts off really well and I loved that the FMC was 130 years old and the captain of the army, that felt like a breath of fresh air from the typical damsel in distress stuff.

I liked that it introduced some fun fantastical creatures that I haven’t seen a lot of in other books.

However, about 30%-50% through the book I started to loose interest but I felt like I was too Invested to stop reading.

This takes place in a fae world yet the fae have no magic which I found rather boring, there wasn’t a lot of fae lore other than a few brief mentions of witches having magic but that’s it.

The multi pov was really intriguing at first and it left me wondering why we were getting some of the povs we were but then it got too distracting from the main storyline and while I think the info we learned was necessary, the book should have been longer or info learned differently to compensate for what we lost because of the switching.

The romance happened wayyyyyy too fast, I don’t mind if something isn’t a slow burn but there needs to be good emotional build up and the push and pull that comes with this type of romance and we didn’t get that.

The writing was not very descriptive, we never knew what anyone was wearing or what locations really looked like and I found myself asking a few times “when did they sit down or move across the room?”

I felt like we didn’t see a lot of emotional depth to the characters and I don’t feel like the romance happens between a couple that’s evenly matched. Some of the things make the MMC seem weak and while I don’t feel like the MFC really embodied what the caption of the armies should, she definitely seemed to be a stronger character.

It was also pretty predictable most of the time and there wasn’t a lot I didn’t see coming so I would have loved for there to be at least one twist that wasn’t anticipated.

It wasn’t the worst book I’ve ever read and I will give the second book a chance but it didn’t satisfy me very much.

This was rounded up to a 3.5⭐️ for me.

I was absolutely hooked from the first few chapters. Elianna is a badass leader of the fae armies who has conflicting feelings about the war in general. Jace is the leader of the mortal rebels just trying to keep their species surviving. With a fae Queen hellbent on wiping out the human race, can Lia and Jace put aside their different backgrounds to end the war?

Tropes:

- Enemies to Lovers (but it felt a bit too instant for me)
- Stabby FMC
- Fated Mates
- Fae/Human Wars
- Found Family
- Multi POV

3.75 stars (rounded to 4) ! This was a solid introduction to this author’s work. I really enjoyed the FMC and the clever use of soft tropes throughout the story. While the plot felt a bit thin in the middle, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment.

As the first book in a trilogy, it did a great job laying the groundwork for the series, and I’m excited to see how the story unfolds in book two. I have a feeling the best is yet to come!

(Note I will add a comment to this review once have finished the trilogy as I often find that a trilogy can be a solid 5* but the first book is needed to build the world)

3.5/5⭐️
So. The premise sounded really nice, the side characters’ plots were engaging, the villains felt ok, not too complex but they accomplished their role, there wasn’t that much world building and it was quite simple to follow. It was an enjoyable read, sure.

The issue to me was that the MCs relationship’s development felt disappointedly short. I would’ve liked a slower burn, but it just all came down to the same thing as any other romantasy and the path towards it wasn’t that nice to make up for the fast pace. I don’t mind closed door sex scenes but there was one open door scene that also felt incredibly short and sooooo underwhelming, specially since it was their first time. I truly don’t need details of their every encounter but if you’re going to be more explicit during the first one idk, make it more impactful.

I like the politics part of the plot and I’m not planning on leaving the trilogy altogether but truth be told the way the MCs relationship was handled was not that good and since it’s a big part of the plot… I do hope the second book picks up because it has potential.
