Can't believe I have not read any Darcy Coates before haunted houses are my favorite trope!

It is hard to talk about this book without giving away some major plot twists but will try my best. Leigh is a young woman who loves her house so much that when she was able to she brought it off her landlord. For the past 15 years, she has lived there with no problems then something begins to stir in the night and she has to face the truth that there may be something else in her home.

Things I loved about this book include
1. The plot twists, although they brought nothing new to the horror genre still left me flabbergasted each time especially the one about 30% in.
2. The atmosphere, the sense of dread that envelopes the house, and her ordeals with the something remind me of nightmares I have had making it all the more creepy.
3. The beginning and the ending both had me on the edge of my seat.

Some things I was not such a big fan of included,
1. How long the book was, I feel it meandered in places that could have easily been cut with not so much removed from the story
2. The use of first person narrative has never been a favorite for me personally however, this did not take too much away from the story and I can see stylistically why this was chosen.

Overall really enjoyed and after looking at what other books she has written will definitely be checking out more of her work.

With a slow start, I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy this book, but a little over halfway through it started to get really interesting. I wasn’t fond of the description of the monster and his activities, as they seemed descriptive to the point of being boring. I loved the relationship between the two people in the house and how it developed throughout the book. The ending was obvious to me but I still enjoyed this horror story.

Without giving spoilers, this book is both scary and mysterious. I really enjoyed how it kept switching my expectations and keeping me off balance while also having some genuinely heartfelt moments. I haven't been much of a fan of the horror/scary genre, but I'd be definitely interested in reading more from this author (and look at that, she has a lot of other published works to keep my occupied).
