My greatest hope is that readers believe this book. I've been working in digital media for ten years, and the accuracy and clear-sightedness with which Lockwood manages to portray what it's like to be a content creator, to be Extremely Online, was surreal, particularly in the moments when it felt like the narrator was scratching at the inside of her own skull, trying to figure out whether her thoughts were her own, trying to understand what a legacy means when THIS is what you do for a living. Also spookily accurate was the second half of the book, the effect of tragedy and real, breathing life on your thoughts, your sense of legacy. This was catharsis. I loved it.

If you have the urge to read a 200 page book that kind of reads like a series of tumblr shit posts but is also really exquisitely written then this is the book for you. Despite some really incredible prose I found the first part of this novel somewhat difficult to get through. I was thinking it was a 3 star read at best. But the second half completely won me over. It maintains the style of the first part but is more grounded in the real world which for me made it must easier to understand. I would really like to give this book to a 25 year old in 30 years and see if they understand the first half of the book at all. There are so many references to recent events and current internet culture it feels like within the next decade this book will be borderline incomprehensible to all but the smallest subset of millennials.

There is some beautiful prose in this book
It captured the feeling of that suffocating molasses feeling the online world often feels like, however it didn’t breech the why it feels or is like that, and that to me felt like an itch I wanted scratching

I found the narrator confusing and disorientating but that is the point

This will stay with me

This book broke my heart. I’m sad I had to rush through it since it is due tomorrow. What you first think is a satyrical book about the internet and the people using the internet turns in to such a tender saga about a family. TW: infant death

I listened to the audio version, which probably made the first half of the book harder to follow along. The main character is famous on Portal, a social media platform, and slowly becomes addicted. Until a family emergency pulls her back to reality.

The first half was tougher to get through, it was hit or miss with it's satirical musings on social media (the Portal), politics, and our generation's views. The second half of the book was really moving and humanizing. We switch gears to a more cohesive story, which is much more my speed.

When you stand back and look at the two writing styles it makes sense - the first half is filled with nonsensical, comment style observations (like posting in the Portal), while the second half fills the pages with emotions and images (like reality). Not my favorite book, but I appreciate the artistic style.

I found the way it was written a little bit difficult, the content is pretty sad and is autobiographical so keep that in mind
