This was such a confusing book? The Roman Lady's Illicit Affair had moments of stunning brilliance - of deep longing, of finding your way in life in a world that sees you as less-than-human. At the same time, some parts of it were really odd, like the instant love that appears after the main characters exchanging two sentences, or the ending, which was too abrupt. The historical detail Gilbert includes, however, was as stunning as always. I love how she doesn't shy away from the bloodshed and cruelty of the Roman empire, which ends up being glorified in so much fiction.
