Another biography from the king of bios of '60's rock stars. Norman is certainly a talented writer and this is a thoroughly readable book.

What a lazily written, researched, and edited book.

At first this was just going to be a quick scan for me, especially seeing that the author's prior works were on musicians that aren't my cup of tea (Elton John among those).  However, it did draw me in, perhaps because I realized I had never really read a Hendrix biography before, so I'm not sure if someone who is familiar with one Hendrix's many other biographies would find anything new or interesting here.  It seems competent throughout and felt like a full unbiased portrait.  I'm actually grateful to the author for correcting a lifelong misconception that I held about Hendrix's death and drug usage in general, which was much less than I had been led to believe.  That said, the author does spend a lot of time on his death going into a somewhat Rashomon-like retelling from different viewpoints, although clearly at the end it appears unintentional and of course highly tragic. The aftermath of his estate, or better to say his future royalties, was somewhat depressing but not too surprising.

Rules for life:
1. Never trust a man who has one L in the name Philip.
2. Never trust a person with two first names for their name.
3. Never trust a man with a boring name to write a book about a man like Hendrix.
Anyway apart from all that, how could you make his life so utterly dull?
Well this book somehow did.
Maybe Jimi just actually lived a boring life.
Underwhelmed by this one.

(Unrelated to rating but) I don’t know who proofread this but they did an awful job. So many formatting issues

This was very interesting in parts, but also contained some troubling attitudes toward queerness that didn't work for me. I don't know anything about Jimi Hendrix's sexuality beyond that he had a lot of it, but equating potential queerness as a shameful thing is just gross.
