I was expecting YA but got pre-teen instead. Which is fine. It’s a cosy little book with a few darker aspects. Mona, the protagonist, is apparently 14 years old. She comes off as somewhere between 10-12. It seems like a 14 year old written how a parent wish their 14 year old was: naive and childlike. I have four children, and all of them were more like Spindle than Mina when they were 14. But that probably says more about me as a parent than anything else.

Buddy read for the month of July and it is the most adorable book ever.
Cute whimsical little cozy fantasy with a sprinkling of genocide mixed with a sense of belonging. It touches on mature themes while still keeping a warm and fluffy texture and never strays too far from fairytale whimsy. Much like some Disney films and A:TLA, it is definitely a story with a surprising amount of depth and life wisdom but packaged in an innocent little facade that you can expose children to where they only discover the true meaning of once they get older.
Mona is a small-time wizard in a world where magic is uncommon and specific - if one is born with magic powers they are usually limited in scope to a specific area. Mona's power is dough magic - she can encourage dough to rise, bread to harden, and put life into gingerbread men. This makes her an incredible baker but useless, in her estimation, in everything else. So imagine her surprise when her life takes a sharp left turn after she finds a murdered dead woman in her bakery one morning.
This book is a gorgeous, fun little read that I didn't expect much from, but turned out to be full of heart and insight about life and self confidence. Definitely highly recommended for most people, and is a cute shorter read for anyone in a reading slump.
Also I love Bob and I will do anything for Bob.
