I'm so lucky to keep finding poets whose voice is similar to mine in experience and longing. Like Amanda Lovelace and Rupi Kaur, many of Trista Mateer's poems are poems that I could have written myself, if only I had had the words. Trista speaks for me, though we do not know each other, she echoes my experiences of love and men as if she has been by my side through it all.

I'm very excited to read more of her work.

Relatable

As a poet, I relate to a lot of the things that Trista said and expressed. Does the person I’m thinking of read my poems? Should I have shared that? Am I romanticizing the bad days?

Would definitely recommend.

Warning: contains some graphic sexual poems.

[Redacted] by Trista Mateer is the second collection of poetry I've read by the author, whose The Dogs I Have Kissed, I really enjoyed last year. [Redacted] is a compilation of everything Mateer wrote in April 2016. It started as the National Poetry Month's poem-a-day challenge, but Mateer expands it to include handwritten poets, tweets, etc. I adored this mix of poetry and prose. It was filled with emotional and despite how brief it was (about 60 pages) I just loved reading it. The poetry is accessible and powerful, it's a very confessional, raw style of writing. My main complaint about [Redacted] is just that it's too brief and I wanted more. I'll definitely continue to pick up poetry collections by Mateer in the future.

As far as character inspiration goes, I always find it in Trista Mateer's books and this one just has been full of heart-wrenchingly honest feelings and thoughts and relationships, and just the whole package. This has been a direct improvement to my saturday. And my own writing, in that matter. ♥

Some cool unique stuff going on in here but there can only be so many poems apologizing for writing people poems before I question whether or not there are any poems that aren't apologies. I'm just not a fan of poems that refer to themselves as poems unless it's done super well and sparingly.

JESUS this was good. Holy shit. The mixed media, the words, the everything. Everything about this touched me so intimately.
