Persuasion by Jane Austen

Quotes: "She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older: the natural sequel of an unnatural beginning."

“there are so many who forget to think seriously till it is almost too late.”

"I could think of you only as one who had yielded, who had given me up, who had been influenced by anyone rather than by me."

"He had imagined himself indifferent, when he had only been angry; and he had been unjust to her merits, because he had been a sufferer from them.

“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone forever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago."

Review: Published in 1817, Persuasion is the story of Anne Elliot, who at 19 was engaged to Frederick Wentworth. A member of the Royal Navy. But of low society standing. Following advice from a mentor, she breaks the engagement. Thus breaking Frederick's heart. He leaves. She immediately begins to feel regret. 7 years goes by, and she doesn't meet anyone who warms her heart like he did. His sister and her husband become Anne's neighbors,  dread, and hope fills her. As she knows, Frederick is coming back.

This is filled with flowery prose. And it is a very slow-burn sort of story. But the ending made it all worth it. There's a good number of characters, and I feel some of the storylines took too much time to resolve. It builds an anticipation between the main characters. Anne has to be around Captain Wentworth and see how beloved by his friends he is. And what her life would've been like. Frederick sees Anne being pursued by another suitor and realizes the flame he held for her never went out.

The heart of the story is beautiful.
I will say, I despised Lady Russell and Mr. Elliot. I found it refreshing that Anne realized how badly she hurt him.
Also, how Frederick finally got to speak to Anne was perfect.

Overall, it's a great book and one that I'm glad to have read. 📖

Thank you for reading 📚

I read this one summer when I was a teenager and had a hard time getting through this book. I've never been a fan of Jane Austen but wanted to give it a fighting try. Maybe if I reread it as a 30 something year old I might like it but for now I absolutely hated this book.

I just love Jane Austen. I love her writing style even though I can only truly follow along in complete silence. I love that it makes me feel like I’m using my brain. I love her protagonists always and Anne is no different. I wish she was a bit more confident and outspoken but I understand that it’s part of her character. My only gripe is that the romance happened too fast. I wish we’d gotten more time of Anne and Wentworth rekindling their previous romance.

I have been known to be (very controversially) a Jane Austen hater.... this is the book that changed my mind. To be fair I had only read Pride & Prejudice when I declared that I did not care for Austen, but in my defense I read it like three times. I thoroughly enjoyed Persuasion though. I finally appreciated Jane Austen's humor and ability to write a love story. In my opinion, this is one of the best love stories I have ever read and truly was just deeply entertaining. Thank you Jane Austen, I'm sorry for disliking you for so many years.
