“I am half agony, half hope.”

“If there’s anything unagreeable happening men are sure to get out of it.”

I think I would have enjoyed this one more if I had of watched a film adaptation of it right before.

I still did like it! And would like to reread it someday. I’m always down for a second chance romance, and I loved the moment where Captain Wentworth realized he might have a chance at getting Anne back. So good!

As always in an Austen novel, the side characters are ridiculous and hilarious and altogether a fun time.

I am looking forward to reading more & more Austen now i live in Bath. Loved the references to Milsom street, Camden place, Marlborough buildings etc all places i walk past daily but madness to think she was writing in same place but 200 years ago. I got a little jumbled with all the characters particularly as many first named, others maintain their title - mr, miss, captain etc. Id like to watch an adaptation/ see a genogram as think visuals would solidify the various relationship threads in my mind. Sense & sensibility next.

There had been a time, when of all the large party now filling the drawing-room at Uppercross, they would have found it most difficult to cease to speak to one another. With the exception, perhaps, of Admiral and Mrs Croft... there could have been no two hearts so open, no tastes so similar, no feelings so in unison, no countenances so beloved. Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. It was a perpetual estrangment.

This is my first read of Austen, and what's the best way to be introduced to her world if not by her most romantic novel (according to her aficionados)?

The novel recounts the immense passion of Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth's young romance, and unfolds the equally intense eagerness of their unthwarted hearts. The persuasion of Anne's friends and family that Frederick is a no match for her did successfully broke their engagement—but it did not manage to bury alive the genuine feelings Anne and Frederick felt for each other, the feelings which proved to have only grew deeper in the passing years.

Persuasion eloquently and compellingly portray the charm of second chance romance (the 8 years separation, the unexpected meetings, the awkwardness, the longing stares, the thorough observations), the brilliance of maturity of both heart and mind (Anne's evident growth in choosing what she wants and what she knows is best for herself, and in making decisions and standing on it), the grace of forgiveness and yearning (“You pierced my soul. I am half agony, half hope.” "I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago.”), and the poetry of honest confession and open communication.

I now understand the sentiment of many about how this is Austen's most mature novel (even though I haven't yet read her other works): Jane Austen is known for her humorous characters and social satire critiques, however, Persuasion is more contemplative, evocative, and emotional in nature—this change of style astonished her readers in the most splendid way, making it remarkable.

This novel easily earned a 5 star from me and made me much more determined in exploring Austen's works.
