Huh... some of these fairytales are tough to read even as an adult. It’s weird when thinking that HCA stories were always my favorite as a child.

I found it hard to rate this because it’s a collection of stories and some were enjoyable others were boring so.. 3 stars middle rating.
It is interesting to read the original stories that have inspired Disney movies especially the little mermaid.

Tahle knížka mě vrátila zpátky do dětství, spoustu pohádek už jsem znala, ale i tak jsem si to moc užila.

I always find classics very challenging to read. The writing style is very different of course but very beautiful. My inner child spirit is so happy upon reading some of my favorite stories like The Little Mermaid and The Princess and the Pea.

Not as amazing as I was expecting
The stories were alright, if not more on the darker side than I imagined. I know they're short stories so my expectations weren't very high but the second to last story, The Marsh King's Daughter I absolutely hated. It was far too long, far too on the nose of 'Christian' for me and not even Ina a stuble/metaphoric kind of way and I just didn't like it at all. At four different points I thought we had reached the end of it but it just kept going and I was over it. I don't regret reading it though and I liked the illustrations though at times I found some of them to have been far too crowded and overdone those were far and few between.

These tales only grow in their relevance to modern times.

Urgh. That was a bore. Awful to read and so much misogyny. Out of the 89 stories, I knew 8 going in. And none of them were nearly as good as the retellings and adaptations I read before.
I’m a bit tempted to read the Grimm’s stories in the same collection - because at least those are interesting. We’ll see. Because right now I lost all respect for Andersen.
