Gerald's Game
by Stephen King
(spoiler alert)
— 4.75 ★
first read of august! <3
this book was magnificent and it totally captured my attention from the very beginning.
i loved how the story progressed in one location (the Kashkwamak Lake) and has two interchanging timeline— from jessie's childhood, which i called the ‘eclipse’ and the present time in which she is facing a certain death, chained in the bedpost.
this story was full of suspense and a little bit gore from the dog's little dinner of.... anyway, as i said the book was suspenseful because you will really anticipate what is going to happen next to the main character, jessie.
and as expected of the King, it made me shiver in fear and horror when i read that LINE! where the ‘space cowboy’ entered the scene.
i almost closed the book and breathe but i didn't do that

"i love too hard, my love is twice as bad, but i believe... that a woman should be loved that way,” he said.
"she felt no hate for him; she felt no love for him. she felt a kind of horror and disgust for herself."

Sadly, I watched the movie first. Luckily, it was so long ago I don't remember much. Besides the premise. I knew this was going to be a difficult read given the subject matter. It was. King challenged himself with Misery by asking: what if I limit two characters to one house? With Gerald's Game, he took it even farther by focusing on a single character in one room. This book will make you mad, upset, pissed off, and terrified. It seems like that's really all i read...

I honestly can't believe what I'm about to say, but with this one, the movie was actually better! A lot! As always, King writes excellently, but the chilling tone the novel lays out never got to me. I get what the story was to convey and it's a brilliant plot. However, this is definitely not one of my favorite King works. Or just maybe Mike Flanagan is such an amazing filmmaker. Yeah, that ought to be it :)
