It's not often I give a book 5 stars, but this one is highly deserving of it.

Birds in Flight is beautifully written the characters are deeply thought out and the scenery described is spectacular.

As a mystery/thriller I was hooked from the beginning, wanting desperately to know what happened to Elsa and Ellie. It takes a long time - and a few twists and surprises along the way - to find out.

Oftentimes, I find myself skim reading or becoming impatient with the middle of a mystery/thriller as I find the stories lag or veer off course on the way to the ending. This was not the case with Birds in Flight. The road trip Iris and Lily take is one that you feel you are a part of. Something interesting and relevant happens at every stage of the journey.

The relationships between the characters, past and present, are wonderfully woven. The changing POV between young Lily and present-day Lily make the book easy to read - which had me devouring numerous chapters at a time and makes the entire story (and the subsequent solution to the mystery) flow very well.

I'd never heard of Anni Taylor before reading Birds in Flight but, based on this novel alone, I look forward to checking out other books she's written.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I cared deeply about the characters almost from the very start. I was fascinated by the travels in Australia. I had no idea that there would be so many twists! This is a great story.
