This book has been recommended so many times and I finally read it. I could have done without the Jesus-ey parts but it doesn’t take over the book. I found myself thinking omg this is me! Omg this is him! It’s not even necessarily something to only read if your relationship is in trouble. Its a good preventive thought process. I love the concept of love tanks and how you can become fluent in different love languages. I’ll reference it again and again.
While a bit dated in certain sections and too much discussion of Jesus for my tastes, Dr. Chapman does a great job of using some of his own experiences and the things he's learned from some of his patients to show the reader what his Five Love Languages look like in practice.

Until I read this, I had a very narrow understanding of what each of these love languages mean. Would’ve liked to have seen more about how love languages differ in different types of relationships and situations.
This book seemed very oriented towards married couples, particularly struggling heterosexual couples, rather than any couples. It also seemed to address men to a higher extent.
Overall, interesting ideas, although they were based too much on anecdotes and Bible quotes based on my liking.

If there is one book only, which you can read, then it is "The Five Love languages". Beautiful understanding of relationships and communication.
Gary Chapman, a renowned marriage counselor and author, brings his deep expertise to The 5 Love Languages. This timeless relationship guide simplifies the complexities of love, offering readers a practical framework to nurture and strengthen their bonds. With relatable examples and clear explanations, Chapman makes the concept of "love languages" accessible to everyone, from couples to families and friends.
The book introduces five distinct ways people express and receive love: Words of Affirmation,
Acts of Service,
Receiving Gifts,
Quality Time,
and Physical Touch.
Chapman emphasizes that understanding your own and your partner’s primary love language is the key to deeper emotional connection. The relatable anecdotes make the lessons engaging and memorable, while the quizzes and tips provide actionable steps to apply the insights in real life.

These are such simple but seldom considered ideas. Having read it, I would certainly recommend it to couples both personally and professionally. My husband and I have both learned a lot and had great discussions just based on the quizzes (which you can find on the author's website). Good stuff.
A friend recommended I read this, as we often discuss the likelihood that specific people will be good partners. The book, while somewhat over-illustrated and -reinforcing, provides an interesting perspective on the intersection of communication and personality - specifically, how different people conceptualize love.
I should note that I am typically not a fan of "self-help" books, as they often seem rudimentary and directed to a certain audience (note: this one makes references to NASCAR and flea markets). However, this book is derived from anthropological principles and the author's counseling experiences, yet presents its thesis in an approachable and useful way. Overall, it is a quick read that offers universal guidance on understanding what behavior motivates you and your partner to love.
