I expected a lot more from this book. It has been recommended to me several times and by women (and a few men) whom I admire. After reading it, I do not feel that I gained much by reading the book. Phrases like "emotional love tank" were extremely off-putting and the examples of implementing the love languages were clichéd and outdated. For being such a small book, I was shocked at the meager amount of real content. For example, the Gift of Self (under the love language Receiving Gifts) is all but indistinguishable from the love language Quality Time. In conclusion, I would say read it if you have a spare half hour, but don’t invest much more time or energy into this book.

I really enjoyed this book! It brought a lot of good insight to relationships and learning to love. Love isn’t just something that happens - it’s something we dedicate time to and work on.
I think it’s a great book to read with your partner as well as alone! I would recommend it. The one thing that was eh is that it was really repetitive. A lot of stories confirmed the same theme. Other than that, good short and fast informative read.

This book really helped me learn that not everyone gives and receives love the same way. What fills my cup does not necessarily fill my husband’s. He and I read it together, one chapter every night and it really opened up a dialogue on how we love and what each other needs. I’ve even applied it to my friendships, learning how to better love those around me. When I started this book, I did not think it would be as impactful as it was. Super glad to have read that so early on in my relationship.

The book is well-written. I look forward to applying all that I've learned from it. I think my love language is "Acts of Service"-I'm unmarried have experienced none though....smiles.
The five love languages, that we all know by now, is a moderately interesting framework. It held far more credibility to me before I read this book. The author tells the same story many times over again - a couple is having issues and is on the verge of a breakup until I tell them about the love languages. They adapt their behavior and their relationship is saved. The simplicity of these stories, combined with the religious overtones, made it clear that this framework is more of a personal mission than anything grounded in scientific research.
Still, the “love languages” themselves offer value in giving a language for people to communicate their needs, if nothing else, so I give 4 stars to the framework and 2 to the book.
