It hurt so bad to read. It took me two hours to read the first two chapters. I recently lost a father figure he was killed in a car accident and the way Rebecca described the grief of the mom and Ember was so so true to how I feel. I had to stop because I couldn’t take reliving the pain of that first day my sister told me he died. They had two kids together a 3year old girl and a 6 years old boy. The officers knocked and did a similar thing that recent described it was so similar. The mom reacted the same way my sister did. The book is very very well written but my grief is still to fresh to finish it.

"Plans change, you adjust the sails and go with it."

An emotional story with a happy-for-now ending. Lots of assumptions, miscommunications, and all that typical trope-y stuff but an interesting storyline that kept me curious for more.

The beginning made me cry real tears.
I ventured a guess about Josh's background and thankfully was invested in their relationship enough to keep reading and see how the storyline played out.

I was disappointed in the happy-for-now ending; I prefer firm closure. I don't trust that Josh would remain faithful, since he kept using other women whenever Ember decided to not be with him. And let's face it, his excuse that he was 10 hours away visiting his mother and someone else used his bed simply isn't sitting right with me.

Also, why wasn't his mother at the pinning ceremony? Don't get me wrong, I actually thought that was a heartwarming scene (before the classroom sexcapades, of course) but found the plot hole quiiite coincidental.

I'll try the next book in the series and see how it goes. What I really want, though, is to read more about Ember's post-grad life as a military spouse and ...? Think of the possibilities!

P.S. I was grossed out when Josh kissed Ember's puke mouth at the cabin. Really could have done without that image.

A heartwrenching Yarros masterpiece!

This series starter is amazing! It is raw, heartwrenching and will rip you apart!

Then it gets sweet, and funny, and make you fall in love with the story and the authors style of writing (if you aren’t already).

You can tell this is an earlier work for the author, something about it is less refined and more raw, and it was an amazing book.

I listened to the audio and loved it, the narrators brought these characters to life so well!
