Yay! Calix finally gets a book!

Poor Calix. He’s been lonely and kinda of mopey in every book before this one. I’m so clad he finally gets a mate dropped in his lap!

I liked this book a lot. The rescued slave trope is ridiculously common in this genre, but that’s ok. The boom is well written and it was nice to have another book in this series.

TW: slavery, sexual assault

I DNFed this book at 27% and removed the rest of the series from my Kindle.

I have liked all the other series this author has wrote, and I have read them all up to this series, this book. I tried to finish this book out of a sense of loyalty, but I immediately stopped it when I realized things were not going to get any better.

This series was darker from the start, which didn’t bother me as I have read much, much darker. However, the topic of slavery, even in a “steamy science fiction romance” needs to be handled with care.

Not only was the topic written about poorly and unrealistically, but the author uses the miscommunication trope to further the fact that the FMC thinks she’s a slave. Not once in the first 27% of the book does anyone say clearly “you’re not a slave anymore. We have given you your freedom.”

Which brings me to this- slaves can’t say no. Do I believe that the FMC was willing to be sexually touched within hours of meeting the MMC? Absolutely not.

All this brings me to say that the plot of this book was so far off from believable or romantic, that it jolted me right out of the story. Do not recommend.
