Hard book but I really liked Chen’s writing even if it took a second to get into it. Thoughtful and sensitive consideration of time and art. A book about immigrants without being a book about immigrants.

An beautiful debut novel that is occasionally over ambitious in scope. Venturing across themes of death, time, art, internationalism, projects, and immigration, Chen wraps big ideas in her prose with millennial irony juxtaposed with intense emotion. Not afraid of an allusion, Chen rewards the reader with references to Watership Down and The Great Gatsby. But amidst entertaining stretches, Chen ventures into art and life philosophy that slow even the most literary snobs down.

I enjoyed the book and it’s reflections on death and aging. I would recommend it to anyone with the caveat that some sections are a bit much.

Really lovely exploration of modern life through a pretty specific lens. I usually don’t like millennial media but I this was more than what it seemed on the surface.

mixed feelings - typically, books in which so little happens/so much space is spent on quasi-philosophical musings actually bring some insight, but this seemed to facilitate little of that. if anything, the experience of reading of the book seemed to mirror the theme of monotonous, inevitable passage of time...
