One of the best books I have read, as a teenager struggling for identity, the catcher in the rye struck a chord with me and in adulthood this book has done the same.

Carpenter makes so many observations, some incredibly humorous others raw, cutting the crap and stripping away the bullshit; leaving you thinking holy shit he's right, he has a damn good point.

It felt like three books in one and he nearly timed the pace of the book to a t, the final third was definitely read with most appetite.

Începe foarte bine, simți vibe-ul ăla al străzii, al marginalilor și al delincvenților, scriitura brută mi-a adus aminte de stilul lui Hubert Selby Jr., maestru incontestabil al poveștilor cu lumpeni americani, dar te prinzi urgent că nu-i exact genul de carte pe care crezi că ai cumpărat-o. Păstrează totul într-o zonă de mijloc, niciodată nu trece granița spre ceva plin de impact. Înaintează încet, se concentrează pe chestii oarecum mundane, deși pertinente, și punctul culminant - adevăratul punct culminant vine undeva pe la jumătate, iar apoi totul trenează călduț într-o zonă nu destul de interesantă ca să susțină o sută și ceva de pagini în care tot aștepți să vezi finalul ăla perturbator.
Not terrible, but not great.

P.S. Blurb-ul l-a scris cineva care evident n-a citit ultima sută de pagini, pentru că a spune despre cartea asta că „their strange double drama comes to a violent and revelatory end.” e ca și cum ai spune despre o carte scrisă de Alice Munro că se sfârșește violent și revelator. Și nu există pe lume minciună mai mare.
