I think this is the weakest of the Rincewind books that I’ve read. It’s also the shortest, so that might be part of it. It still has Rincewind failing at living a boring life, and the luggage causing mass destruction. It’s still fully a Rincewind story, but it’s just missing something. Eric is fine, but he doesn’t really do a whole lot. The demons are fun, but they never reach the peak of our previous villains. The best new character is probably the parrot. I think part of what this one is missing is that Rincewind doesn’t accidentally become a hero in this one. That’s one of my favorite parts of his character usually. He tries so hard to not be a part of anything, but when faced with it he usually does the heroic thing and saves everyone. Still good and enjoyable, but just different.

Discworld takes on Dante, Goethe, Aztecs, Homer and the beginning and end of time, care of Rincewind and the Luggage. Fun stuff.

I got into Discworld in 1987, starting with The Colour of Magic and so Rincewind was always my favourite character. Most Discworld fans I've met have him pretty low on their list, possibly in part because of how different TCoM and TLF are to the later series which they got into.

When Sourcery was over I became fairly sad that the next 3 books centred around different characters with no Rincewind or The Luggage, but then Faust Eric was released...and it was large format picture book that cost three or four times as much. I could see from the Kirby cover art that it seemed Rincewind was back but that was that. Not sure why I didn't order it from the library, but there we are. I think it took another year for them to put it out in a paperback form so I could buy it, but it was great to finally have some Rincewind back in my life.

Anyway, despite a few jokes that aged a little poorly, this is still top-notch Discworld stuff. I really enjoy the way he weaves the story into Discworld's parallel history nicely joining things up while at the same time giving us the fun of the demons.

Mediocre characters, decent plot

Definitely not my favorite of early Discworld, but it did grow on me with time. Eric himself was absolutely terrible initially but grew a tiny bit, which was nice. Lack of female characters was annoying, particularly given the only one really features was treated as the butt of a joke.

Still, the Hell stuff was great, it's always good to see Rincewind, and at least the character of Eric was shown to be terrible, unlike "Nice Guy" Mort!
