A constant thing said in the book - touched on by all sorts of people, from journalists to ordinary folk who lived in what came to be known as the Zone - is the notion that what transpired at Chernobyl simply transcends normal language or human experience. It is incomparable to anything else.
Yet even with this being so, this book gives us an effusively brilliant perspective on this tragedy, and the real people whose lives were forever transformed by it.
If you only ever read one book about Chernobyl, let it be this one.
