i don't care for brooklyn. sure, it's hip and everyone is spilling their youth there, but the only thing i've found interesting about it is the gowanus canal, a putrid waterway full of chemicals and corpses and hepatitis. maggie nelson's sequence of poems about it transformed it into something beautiful, something worth saving. now, if only she could do the same for the rest of the borough

Great book of contemporary poetry. Bluets is one of my favorite books and this felt as if the same person was writing it (whereas The Argonauts felt a bit different to me).

Nelson's writing is raw and to the point, I constantly had to close the book after reading a line or poem that gutted me to let it roll around in my head for a while.

Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a contemporary book of poetry about love, loss and healing.

This collection taught me that I prefer Maggie’s more prose-like writing, as in The Argonauts or Bluets. The title poem was fantastic, and the whole section titled The Hospital for Special Care was incredible as well. I never really connected with The Canal Diaries.
