I guess I finished this instead of DNFing it because I love Maggie Nelson's other writing and have been waiting so long to find a copy... but it was disappointing. I think I connect with her critical and prosaic style more than her poetic craft. Also, the ableism at points of this book made me sad. I hated her friend's memoir about the accident referenced here (and also in Bluets, but I don't hate how it's discussed on page in Bluets), and it made me viscerally uncomfortable in the main narrative poem in this collection, too.

Really enjoyed this, especially the first half, titled ‘the canal sitters’, there was something very meditative about it. The rest of them poems were pretty good but nothing mind blowing. Content warning for a single ableist word which shocked me, especially given its context of a friend who has been paralysed, and the word basically compared this to her love life which was baffling and quite shocking!
