I loveddd this collection of essays. I felt a Book Mom connection if that makes sense. Barbara is my writer mom and I love her work. I felt connected to everything she was saying and in awe how her critiques of the USA have only gotten more relevant with time.
I am giving up on this book. I am about 1/3 in and just don't think I am in the right place/mindset to get anything from her essays. Too much other great stuff to read, time to move on!
I think I am just not a short stories person. I continuously found my mind wandering while trying to read this.
Many of these essays moved me to the point of tears. Her writing is simply beautiful.
A couple of them moved me to roll my eyes though. Pretty stereotypical rich liberal speaking points about how we need to all grow our own food (not possible or productive) and gmos are bad (not supported by science). But even those essays were amazingly written as always and were way less patronizing then things like that normally are.
All in all though I absolutely loved this book.

Beautiful writing that touches you and makes you think.
It takes me a lot longer to get through her nonfiction, but this was worth hanging on.

I was disappointed at first that this was not a novel. I have loved every novel of hers that I have read. They are so deeply researched with complex characters. This is a group of essays that she wrote shortly after 9/11. Her thoughts about living and our world are even more applicable now than then.
A good book to chew over. Kingsolver articulated, with scientific rationale, opinions on many of the issues which I have formed opinions based on common sense, observation & intuition. The first essay was a little off-putting in its style and heaviness. I would read the essays randomly.
