The Spinster and the Rake is my first read from Eva Devon and I’m glad to say that I enjoyed it. My main interest in reading this book was because of the male love interest, Edward, who’s coded as autistic. It was handled so much better in this book than other historical romance novels I’ve read where the male lead is also coded as autistic. I’m very curious to read more from Devon.

Plot or Character Driven: Character

They meet when he needs space to avoid debutants trying to entrap him into marriage and he believes shes just like everyone else. But she wasn't. She likes the quiet just as much as he does. Although forced into a marriage of convenience to avoid scandal, she will do everything to prove to him she is worthy and he adapts to her.

I never did understand why he was labelled as a rake. His actions never seemed to be rakish to me. And as a mother, the 4 hour first birth at the end isn't realistic. But thats just me. Mine took 4 days!

I definitely saw the pride and prejudice callbacks in this book. I enjoyed the neurodiversity rep and loved both man characters. I did spend most of the book wishing they would just have a productive conversation, though--but that's pretty typical of me. Wish Edward's friend got his own book rather than being a footnote in this one, but it is what it is.

This was a delightful listen. I loved the instantaneous tension between Edward and Georgiana. From their very first words they were deliciously at each others throats with banter and immediate sexual tension. Learning more about Edwards nature and his history with his disability was such wonderful representation of personalities that often misunderstood. Georgiana had such a strong personality in that she knew herself and didn’t apologize for her own mannerisms but embraced them while striving to fit more into his world at the same time. I loved the banter, the love and the loyalty woven throughout this story.

No Rake at but nice story

The Spinster and the Rake grabbed me right away. There were parts of this book that I love and a few parts that were just okay, but I really enjoyed it.

I think that the chemistry between the main characters was really well done. Georgiana and Edward are good, likable characters. Georgiana is bold and determined to do her best, but is maybe too perfect sometimes (with a tiny bit of not-like-other-girls thrown in). Edward cares a great deal for many things, but is grumpy and unsocial (which I, for some reason, like in book heroes). The story is fun and some of it seemed pretty unique for a regency novel. I would definitely read more by this author.

It’s refreshing to read a book where the main characters have good communication between one another.

From the jump, I loved both Georgiana and Edward. Chef's kiss to the characters. It's giving me Braveheart and Pride & Prejudice but I'm not mad. It's my first time reading historical romance, but it wasn't anything like I expected it to be.
