The Silence of the Girls narrates the story of a character usually forgotten, the woman who was a queen and then became a slave and the woman who had to surrender to Achilles' will; it was Briseis. This story focuses on what Briseis witnessed and experienced during her time as a slave in Achilles' camp, where she saw great tragedy and where she met other women like her. She was incredibly helpless and didn't have the capabilities to do anything; not even an escape would provide her true freedom. It was disheartening to see Briseis suffer while also taking a glimpse at what happened to Achilles and Patroclus.

The characters in this book were phenomenal. The story and the writing were beautiful, but I love the real and dynamic emotions of each character. It made me so much more invested in them and the book as a whole. I am naturally drawn towards stories with wars or immense hardships because it really allows the reader to see how the characters develop and change over time. This author was able to use her compelling characters to express such powerful ideas, starting with the title. Throughout this novel, the author shows the strength of women who are fighting against the silencing of their ideas and the slavery of their body even when they are exploited and abused. Though the setting is within the realm of Greek mythology, it rings true to issues we face today. Outstanding and riveting-I can’t wait to read more by this author.
