It’s a bit chunky. Some good stuff, but a sort slow boring read at times.

Have to give this 5 stars - it is probably the most profound leadership book I have ever read. I actually enjoyed this one a bit more than Extreme Ownership as I found it very relatable.

As leaders, we are constantly facing these dichotomies:
-be aggressive but not foolishly risky
-push back, but not too often
-support your team and check in, but don't micromanage
-be confident, but not cocky

Every leader should read and absorb this book and its great lessons:
-no bad teams, only bad leaders
-there is no growth in the comfort zone
-leaders must exercise humility
-it's not what you preach, it's what you tolerate

3.75 stars. Not as good as Extreme Ownership, as it felt more repetitive since it went more in depth on the topics covered in EO.

The book is set up in multiple chapters, each chapter having 3 parts. A story from the Iraq war, expounding on the value/dichotomy, and then explaining it for civilians. The lessons are good, and worth hearing. Leaders should know these balances, and failure to know them and act on them can result in multiple failures of the whole team. I have not read the “Extreme Ownership” but with the cross references between the two, I might be able to argue you should read one or the other, but not both.

As always Jocko helpful explains good leadership strategy. I just read his extreme ownership book and I feel like this one better explains or more fully explains the concepts. It shows how when there is problem you need a balanced solution. Highly recommend

I might be unfair on the rating. The material is good, but it needs a red pen. Busy people don’t need that much detail on the military stories.

This was a great follow up to Extreme Ownership. The authors discuss the push and pull required of leaders. As a former military officer and a current executive, I remember these lessons from the battlefield and have a stronger appreciation for how to apply them to business.
