سایلاس مارنر، بافنده‌ای عضو یک گروه مذهبی کالوینیست در لنترن‌یارد، پس از سلسله‌وقایعی ناگوار، خسته از جور زمانه با دلی شکسته و ایمانی از دست رفته، به رِیْولو، دهکده‌ای ناآشنا مهاجرت می‌کند و به مدت ١۵ سال در آن دهکده، با بیش‌ترین فاصله از مردم شوریده، به کسب روزی از طریق بافندگی می‌پردازد. این گذر یکنواخت عمر، ارزش‌های اخلاقی سایلاس را دگرگون ساخته و وی را در اذهان عموم موجودی عجیب و غریب جلوه می‌دهد. اما در ادامه داستان می‌بینیم که قرار نیست این روند ادامه پیدا کند. داستان دو شخصیت محوری دارد که دومی، گادفری کاس، اشراف‌زاده‌ایست اهل دهکده ریولو که سرنوشتش به نحوی با سرنوشت سایلاس گره می‌خورد. جدای از نثری زیبا و دلنشین، شخصیت پردازی قوی و خودداری از درازه‌گویی، بینش ژرف الیوت نشان از آگاهی کامل وی از شرایط و مشکلات جامعه خود دارد؛ کمااینکه در فرازهایی این مشکلات را در بطن داستان بیان می‌کند. رمان نه‌چندان‌بلند سایلاس مارنر به تمام کلاسیک‌دوستان جهت مطالعه پیشنهاد می‌گردد.
