Had to stop reading because of its depiction of SA. I am not in the headspace to handle it.

This is a horror novel, but written in the 18th century. It's totally freaky, and gets banned a lot, so you know it's good.

i read it for school but i already had it in my pal so it was a matter of time before i read it (thanks to them anyway, because it would have taken years). one, i’m incredibly surprised that i’m putting 4 stars for a novel i had to read for school, that’s unexpected. two, this book was as atrocious as it was incredible and captivating. there are so many themes evoked, and the main character of ambrosio is probably the most hideous character i’ve ever read about in my entire life. but boi what a journey.

A dark and goregous piece of Gothic literature. There are few other salacious, inherently evil and depraved characters as the monk in Lewis' novel. The Monk was briefly mentioned in a British Literature class. I didn't give it much thought until I happened upon a copy in a used bookstore, and thought "It's a $1.50, won't be too much of a waste." I'm so glad I picked up that novel. It' beautiful and awful, the writing is brilliant. I could rave over this novel for days, but its much more effective it you read it yourself.
