I’ve read a handful of Agatha Christie mysteries, and I generally enjoy them, but I’m not a huge fan of her most beloved detective, Hercule Poirot. Yes, it’s fun that Poirot is so much smarter than everyone else, but how could we ever possibly figure out the mystery when basic facts of the case that he has are kept from us, the readers? For this reason, I always find the ending of these books unnecessarily complicated and a bit frustrating.
In true Christie fashion, the mystery is complex and everyone is a suspect. I was fairly interested in the plot, but felt a bit annoyed with the book throughout. I think a big reason for that is that the narrator, Hastings, is insufferable. Following the case from his point of view resulted in more than a few eye rolls from me. In my opinion, this book is not one of Christie’s best.
