Really enjoyed this. Women, witches and werecats? You had me at hello.

This quick read packs a lot into a little space. Patience and her ward, Gilly, live quietly in a small village. Patience has skills with herbs and magic, but she keeps this pretty quiet, since witchcraft is a death offense. Still, some villagers come to her for help with various problems.

Patience has seen some horrible things- women like her being burned and hanged. She's under no illusions about most people's capabilities and limitations. She has a lot of compassion, but the detachment that a healer needs. She's a great character- not sentimental, brutally pragmatic, and quite capable.

There is a small shapeshifting community hidden in the village. One of them becomes careless at just the wrong time- when some witch hunters are in town on the trail of a woman that Patience hid in her home for a few days. When the shifter is discovered, along with Gilly who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, Patience goes into emergency escape mode. All does not go according to plan, however.

The characters in this book come alive quickly, and I immediately was immersed in the story. I haven't read anything else by this author, so I missed a bit of background that might have made the story richer. As with any good novella, I ended up wanting more. This was mostly a slice of Patience's life, a vignette that takes place between books, apparently. I'll be seeking those books out!
