Before starting this book, I wasn't all that into YA romances. They all seemed the same. Sappy love stories, moving too fast, and in the end, the boy and girl end up together. This book, though, I never saw coming. I loved it and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Britta is a fierce girl who's managed to stay strong despite being an outcast and a loner. But when she finds that the boy who broke her heart is the one who killed her father, she'll rest at nothing to make sure that he gets what he deserves. The truth isn't always what it seems to be, though, and neither are people. The history between her country of Malam and its enemy, Shaerdan, as well as the stories and memories about others are just as muddled as a muddy puddle. Britta wants the truth, though, and she'll stop at nothing to find it, no matter what the sacrifice may be.

I loved this book completely. It's a fantastic read, and I can't wait to read more from this author. Shout out to Uppercase for putting this book in the 2016 December bundle, because I would have never found it otherwise, and I can't imagine missing such a good read. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!

  •  It was a perfect mix of mystery, action, doubt, travel, suspense, and MAGIC!
  •  This was honestly the fastest read I have had in a fat minute, the book was finished in roughly ish hours! once I started I didn't want to stop
  •  This book reminded me of the same vibe of books that I would read in high school and that in itself was reminiscent. It felt like I was traveling back in time lol
  •  Another cool thing was that the book had a MAP of the world it was written in and I LOVED FLIPPING BACK TO IT EVERY TIME A PLACE WAS MENTIONED lol
  •  I also loved that it revolves around a strong female lead who was a warrior and didn't take anyone's shit (Britta was very blunt and her words definitely bit)
  •  Now that Britta (aka Dove - called by her love interest Cohen) has some sort of connection and idea about her powers I can't wait to see how she gets accustomed to them and to FINALLY see her full potential and strength!
  •  It was a typical love story (nothing mind-blowingly different than what l'm used to) but it was still a nice touch added to the storyline and plot. SOMETHING THAT DID THROW ME OFF WAS THE ENDING!!! that was something that was unexpected and I CAN'T WAIT TO READ THE SECOND BOOK to see how this twist plays out!

2.25 - i would recommend it to your preteen/teen daughters who are getting into trashy teen novels for a quick fun time

:( I'm pretty sure I picked this because of the cover art

How do I explain this? It was mediocre. The plot is interesting enough for me to finish the book, and there were splashes of good writing here and there to further justify my doing so. My issue in a nutshell is that everything was very surface level. Nothing really gripped me like the books I *love* do. But like, if I read this in 6th grade I would've loved it LOL.

Good thing I like to read just to read sometimes, and I'm pretty forgiving as long as I have a book in my hand.

Anyways, on to the next volume because THIS GIRL is a trashy teen novel addict. *CACKLES*

(Excuse my harsh words.)
If you are looking forward to read a nice fantasy story with a strong heroine you should definitely not pay attention to this book.
But if you are looking for a book to rant over, to hate, to laugh about like I do it with the House Of Night series, then this book is for you.
My only urge to end this book was to know how the author would end this crap.
It's sooo hard for me not so swear ahhhh.
I am honestly so disappointed since the description of the book fooled me in so many ways it's impossible. You won't finde uniqueness in this book either way.
I CAN'T WRITE A GOOD REVIEW OR A RANT NOW I AM SORRY.

I haven’t made any notes the entire time I’ve read the book because I’ve read it so quickly, but I’ve had many thoughts. I just finished the book so I’ll get out all my feelings now. 1, Britta never saved herself once in this entire book, she was always saved by someone else and that pisses me off. Period. 2, to be honest..fuck every man this book except Cohen, which is *crazy* for me to say, because I normally hate on the ml first and foremost, but honestly, their romance wasn’t done badly. For Caraval, I spoke on how they had no reason for romance when they had no moments of growing closer, but this is much different because they’ve known each other since kids, which I can appreciate. Britta does piss me off with all her different “😳😞 no..how foolish of me to think he would want me in that way…” thoughts..girl hush. 3, Fuck that pussy Leif. I get it, like he liked Britta bc he got long with her dad or whatever, and felt bad the whole time Omar would “punish her”, and I get that his captain is CLEARLY a strict bitch if he was even punishing his crew..but there’s no fucking way he couldn’t have said at least once to Omar “uh can we cool it a little? You did leave her with TOMAS..yk…the one who
keeps trying to rape her every chance he gets
…so maybe her running away made a little sense?? And for some reason she came back anyway so like..could we not use the whip on her this time ???” She forgave him so quickly too after all that bullshit they did to her. It doesn’t fucking matter that he helped you that one time Britta, what the fuck do you mean you’ll consider him a friend ? Girl, are you dumb ??? Imagine a war victim after her entire family was murdered by another country’s military being like “it’s okay I forgive you” to a member of that military just because he looked like he felt kinda bad while it was happening…BRO he’s still apart of this ENTIRE fucked up system that’s caused so much harm,
a genocide of a people that, you now know, were just like you Britta ???
For gods sake, not to mention they literally tortured you??? And then he wants be like “don’t be so harsh on Captain Omar! He’s already beating himself up for this!” HE TORTURED ME LEIF BRO WHAT?? Don’t even get me started on Omar…literally just don’t like..Britta should’ve been so much madder. I don’t understand how the book’s trying to make it like Leif and Omar were just following orders and now that they know what was going on, they feel bad and are actually decent people. They’re still large components of a corrupt military and their actions have directly caused so much harm and no good..As soon as Omar said
I was absolved of my crimes..after all that bullshit.
Bro there would’ve already been a knife in his neck lmao, I would’ve gotten hanged anyway, but that’s just me..Anyway….4,
one of the last memories you have are directly actions, committed by Omar and Leif, directly causing the only family you have, whom by the way, you only just met, to be killed in your arms..but ok forgive Leif. Speaking of Enat, why didn’t she get any cool scenes?? Like i genuinely was expecting her to go Toph Beifong on them, I’ve been waiting for that since we met her, and she died before she even got a good look at the enemies her granddaughters been avoiding this whole time
..5, I’m not sure if it’s because I’m not used to books yet, but every groundbreaking scene felt very anticlimactic..anyway…I’m not sure why but this book kept me extremely captivated, I read it faster than any other hardcover to be honest. It was enjoyable to read, and everytime I stopped reading I was generally very satisfied, it was nice. It’s a shame that my main thoughts on it don’t reflect that. I’ll be reading the sequel very soon though, and I hope it’ll give me the same feeling I got from this one.

“She better get used to me kissing you and taking advantage of your immobile state.” That’s a crazy thing to say Cohan 😭😭😭

“You’re mine and I’m yours” oh ok you fixed it icl

So this book was just a super cute fun adventure. I have high hopes for this author if this was her debut book.

59244c463f26f2472770c6999bb8abfc.jpgSo we have Britta, all alone in the world after her father dies and her one and only friend Cohen left before her father died to become an apprentice and hasn't been heard of or seen since. When Britta is found and charged  to the highest degree for poaching-an offense punishable by death, Britta is found at an impossible decision...die, or exchange her life for Cohen whom she finds out is her father's murderer.

Britta was trained by her own father at tracking and hunting and she is great with that. I love her because she is super capable, she isn't whiny, she is solid, she isn't annoying....most of the time, she is courageous, smart, strong and so I really appreciated her as a character.

Cohen was an interesting character and overall he was a great guy character. I appreciate ba35d77ed0acfd41b1f20b6e6e88170b.jpgwhen we've got strong, smart, guys and Cohen is one of those. He is a character that I would love to read about and I loved with what the author did with him.

The world building was good and I found it interesting in all the ways that she invoked magic in it.

I found the writing to be okay. It wasn't bad but I've read better however as a storyteller she isn't anything new. I however do have HIGH hopes for this author and definitely look forward to what else she brings to the table.

The romance is what bugged me the most. It was such whip lash for them and then when things seem to settle...I was disappointed. That was... until the END! WHAT THE HECK!

Overall I liked the story a lot. I liked the idea of this constant cat and mouse game with plenty of twists and turns that keep you on your toes. I can honestly say though I wasn't surprised when the shock factor happened, however well played. I really enjoyed the magic aspect throughout the story and the history and world building behind it all. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book because of the freaking ending! SHEESH!

The romance and the magic system are cool but there was nothing special about this book. . . it was just another YA Fantasy.
