Very unlikable people age and struggle toward love. Messy!
Years ago, during her confirmation hearing, the incomparable Ruth Bader Ginsburg mentioned that she was reading the "charming" "Love in the Time of Cholera." Worshiping her even back in 1993, I promptly read "Love in the Time of Cholera," without much comprehension, and checked it off my list in my quest to become a fraction as glorious as RBG.
What a difference decades make. As I read to discover whether Fermina Daza would ever return or even recognize Florentino Ariza's love, I found myself reading aloud to experience the exquisite language more fully. For example: "To him she seemed so beautiful, so seductive, so different from ordinary people, that he could not understand why no one was as disturbed as he by the clicking of her heels on the paving stones, why no one else's heart was wild with the breeze stirred by the sighs of her veils, why everyone did not go mad with the movements of her braid, the flight of her hands, the gold of her laughter."
There's more - lots more. I feel as though I have just made an elegant, witty, and slightly deranged friend who will always be with me.
