I’m mixed on Love in the Time of Cholrea; on one hand it’s writing and use of prose is exemplary and all of which conjure a world which is both beautiful and grotesque in equal measures. On the other hand, a large number of it’s characters are poorly developed, it’s omniscient narrator is rambly at times and it’s depiction of a deeply depraved man is flawed I feel, I feel those aspects would have better captured by a female author.

Unnecessarily long with details that want to bring depth to secondary characters but ends up being only noise.
Can't believe it's considered a classic, this book has discouraged me from reading others of the same author and it does not even has the excuse of being one of his first.
Even considering the difference of time and culture, I have a really hard time believing the female characters could behave as the ones in this book.
I do not consider this book to be about love. It's about obsession and lust. Misogyny, rape, pedophilia are present as normal parts of life, if not glorified.
I enjoyed only the journey around Carthagene and in time. But that's about it.

Read this 3 months ago and forgot to update. What I’ll say is I adored this book and immediately went and bought another of Marquez’s novels.

DID NOT FINISH: 14%

Writing style and descriptions were lovely, but I was bored by the lack of plot or interesting characters.

The last 20 pages were beautiful.... but the 300 or so leading up to them were interminable to me..... I slogged through it because I feel like this in one of those books you're "supposed to love," if you're any sort of intellectual, but I found the story structure, and the way new characters were constantly entering the story willy-nilly, very confusing. That said, I think Fermina and Florentino were some of the best written characters I've encountered. So, I guess there's plenty to love and plenty not to. :-)
