Beautifully written. Plus, I love any book that romanticises suffering and unrequited love.

8.5/10: Satisfying read about many different forms of love and companionship. However, it took me a while to finish—the chapters flowed between topics and characters so quickly that I often had to re-read sections to follow what was being shared.
wow so ok. i’m writing my first scathing review, this is a big moment for me. first, i want to say the writing in this book was absolutely beautiful. i could perfectly imagine the setting and it was just so different from anything i’ve ever read. however there were a few really disturbing parts of this book that i don’t think enough people are talking about.
first the romanticization of rape in this book is absolutely disgusting. it happens multiple times and at one point, the main character(who is in his sixties) grooms and then has an affair with a 14 YEAR OLD. he is her legal guardian and blood relative as well. she ends up committing suicide due to his actions. and i don’t know what the author was trying to do and if his intent was satirical and to point out the atrocity in this, but to me it did not fully come across this way. and if that was the point, i think that should be made VERY clear to the audience.
secondly, this book also glorifies obsession. florentino is OBSESSED with fermina for their entire lives and will not leave her alone, when she repeatedly tells him to. putting myself in her shoes, it would be terrifying. it definitely qualifies as stalking and it’s supposed to be charming i guess?!? i don’t even know.
besides for that the book was just really boring. it’s 350 pages and basically nothing happens.
this book could have been so good, but it was ruined by the gross content and romanticization of horrible and cruel things. i normally feel bad and decide against writing mean reviews, but not for this book.
