I wanted to like this book more than the first, but I liked it probably about the same. Great action scenes, same bad guy, ending I was not expecting...again. Some things I did enjoy: we got to learn more about the characters and their backgrounds, they went on my favorite mission throughout the series, and we also learned more about the past of the zodiac powers. There were definitely some parts that wowed and some that I never saw coming, but it could have been done better. Some things that still bothered me: Steven is the main character and he still doesn’t really have a personality! We do learn more about his background and family life, but that just made me like him less, since he’s even more whiny (he even says it himself!). I previously really liked Jasmine, but was pretty putoff by her in this second book and that annoyed me too
The Zodiacs are trying to deal with the aftermath of defeating Maxwell. The team is starting to fall apart as the lines between good guys and bad guys start to blur.
This book takes place a few months after the first book. The group survived their fight against Maxwell but it left an impact on them. I really liked how this book explored the aftermath of defeating the evil villain.
Some characters are unsure of where they stand now. Some haven’t mastered their powers, some a withdrawing into themselves, and other just want to go back to their families. I think that was my favorite aspect of this book.
I am putting this book on the reread pile as well as the first one. Again I listened to this book on audiobook and it just really confused me. I had a hard time keeping up with the story.
I give this book a C.

An okay follow up to the first book. It’s more of a set up book for the finale.
After defeating Maxwell, the team is fighting to keep it together. As danger comes back, the team is going to need to stay together now more than ever.
With the issues I had from the first one (lack of character development), I do think that this one fixed that some. Steven is one that I really feel like his personality revolves around one or two key points and that's it. He still isn't really fleshed out. His background became more fleshed out, but that didn't come through as any sort of personality.
This one did overall seem to focus on the characters more which really led to it feeling like a middle book. It was slower than the first and really set it up for the last book.
The Dragon's Return had a number of questioning points where the reader can debate who is good and evil. I enjoyed the blurred lines of good and evil on display in this book as it added more flavor than the first one had which simply was good vs evil.
Once again, I think this is great for the age group it's written for, but for an older audience it's missing a lot.

After reading the Goodreads synopsis for this book, I became increasingly concerned and wary of reading it. However, I was pleased to discover that the ending is not as nearly as suffer as the synopsis makes it out to be.
I liked this book, I really did. Unfortunately, it was basically an amped up version of the first book. Plus, one of my favorite characters conveniently disappeared entirely from the story. As I neared the end, I was frightened by the lack of 'page time' this character received and was fearful of the supposed 'major cliffhanger that readers won't see coming'. The cliffhanger occurred with fifty pages remaining. I don't know about anyone else, but I definitely saw it coming.
Once again, the illustrations are beautiful. They are especially helpful due to the high tech involved throughout the book.

Another very fun read! While a bit slower than the first book, this one was still action packed and exciting! I really enjoyed seeing more about their zodiac powers and how they could warn the individual when something was wrong.
I absolutely love that this series has illustrations included.
Can't wait for book 3!
Favorite passages:
“Being defeated is a valuable experience,” Maxwell said. “It’s humbling. It forces a person to take stock, to examine what’s really important. To focus more directly on his goals and take careful steps to reach them. Would you like to know the steps I took?”
“Please, teach me, Yoda,” Steven muttered, his eyes still closed.
Then he held out his arms. "Group hug," he said. "Grug."
Steven frowned. "Is that a thing?"
"It is now." Duane gestured at his computer. "I just added it to Wikipedia."

Wow This is sooo much better than the first one!
