When I read An Apartment on Uranus, I knew immediately that Paul B. Preciado is 10000 x smarter than I am. I went into Can the Monster Speak? knowing this, yet still felt way out of my depth. Despite being much shorter, since Uranus was an essay collection there were some essays that felt more within my grasp. This book is a furious missive, with all of Preciado's anger fuelled at a room of psychoanalysts who view him, a trans man, as a person suffering a mental illness. I believe Preciado originally gave this speech at a psychology conference but was literally booed off stage before he could finish. That in itself should tell you that psycoanalysis is in need of complete overhaul.
My favourite part was Preciado talking about his transition as escaping one set of boundaries only to be hemmed in by a brand new set living life as a man. Gender really is some fuckery.
A lot of it did go over my head, and would probably benefit from a reread plus some further reading to grasp fully.

fabulously laid out argument with references to real world examples of change outside the realm of psychology to show the impact individuals can make in regards to change as a whole.
an exploration into psychoanalysis in comparison to the experiences of a psychoanalyzed trans person who transitioned in adulthood. a plea to the psychoanalyst community to break free of previous confines of their practices to listen to trans people about their persecution and history.
my one critique, which is extremely niche, is that he could have delved further into specific community interactions between psychologists and trans people, the power and violence wielded by psychologists against trans people, and the setbacks that sexologists and previous psycholgists faced in the name of progress. i highly recommend reading into Sandy Stone and Susan Stryker for more on this, who are both mentioned in this book.

The de-platforming Preciado faced at a conference on psychoanalysis led him to write out the planned address, to my great pleasure. This is more easily accessible than some of his academic-tinted work (Testo Junkie, Manifeste contrasexuel), in the vein of Un Appartement sur Uranus, geared towards an either hostile or ignorant audience. Necessary reading for anyone starting to take interest in public discourse on trans*.
