I just don’t need to know every single thought going through the main character’s head.

I have wanted to read this book for years, after I had seen a snippet of the movie. The book did not disappoint.

Radiation from nuclear bombs have wiped out the Northern Hemisphere, and it is slowly moving south. Dwight Towers, Moira Davidson, Peter and Mary Holmes are all waiting in Melbourne Australia for the inevitable.

08/28/2023: I read this again for a challenge (actually 2 challenges). Despite the topic: Radiation from bombs wiping out the entire world. I really like being in Shute's world.

A wonderfully utopian book that could perhaps only take place in Australia. Lovable read but felt of a different time to me

Okay...so maybe this book wasn't absolutely terrible..but I don't like stories that don't have semi-happy endings (which I understand is absolutely stereotypical) but seriously..this book had the most unhappy, hopeless ending ever.

Read this for English Class.

Found it a little boring at times and predictable. However, it does have a few great themes and character development, so I have to at least give that to the author.

Read it if you really want to, just don't expect huge plot twists or explosions going into it. It's simply a different (pretty interesting and plausible, actually) way of looking at the end of the World. The story is also mainly focused on the characters and the way they cope with their fate, and a lot less on the actual plot. Different, interesting, but, sorry, sometimes boring.

Some plan for years to come, while others engage in things they never might have previously. Not being able to fully comprehend the reality of  imminent death  approaching and withering away of everyone and everything we have ever known.

Showing how people react to this in differing ways, this is definitely a book to read.
