Almost a 4 star. My focus for the next few months is to read more fiction in translation. I’ve started with this small coming-of-age volume from Pushkin Press, translated from Dutch. The story begins with Anton as a very young child and his observations about the world around him. In the following sections the narrative jumps through Anton’s childhood and adolescence, showing him at various key stages. The particular focus is on Anton’s friendship with Willem, a school friend who he develops romantic feelings for. It uses the contrast in Anton’s perspectives (with the jumps forward in time) to great effect and I can certainly recommend this as a great coming-of-age tale.

Super quick read but not a lot of depth. Maybe something was lost in translation.
