So, it's a classic. But it is also VERY racist. There are a few places where the protagonist, Laura, notices inequity and objects, but it is surrounded by a lot of pretty egregious racism. So, if you do read this with a child, be ready to stop and discuss/provide context/explain that good people can participate in horrible things. I would not leave a child to read this without commentary.

I wish I had read this book as a child, when it would have seemed magical. As an adult, what I mainly felt was petrified, as the Ingalls family faced one peril after another. But the story is fascinating, despite the fact that I think Ma and Pa Ingalls made some unwise decisions that imperiled their family needlessly. And the blatant prejudice against Native Americans is very hard to read.
