I enjoyed this book of shared friendship and correspondence. I also loved the crafts and the sharing of life with another person - even if at a distance.

You know that tumblr post making fun of recipe blogs that's three rolling lyrical paragraphs about "when I was young every fall we would go walking through the field with the crisp leaves crunching beneath our feet and the sharp woodsy smells of earth floating up our noses...MASHED POTATOES: GET A POTATO. NOT A RAW! BOIL, STAMP."

This is like an entire book of that first part of that post. Too try-hard.

A charming cookbook/crafting lesson/conversation between friends, plus their gorgeous photos and a side of grief and joy. Very charming and after I paged through and checked out the recipes and tutorials, I bought a copy. Thank you, MAV and SCB

I love documenting and the art of it. I'd heard of 3191 but hadn't seen anything in a while. I was so excited last December to find this at the bookstore and decided to go through it over the whole year. I read each month's section on the 1st (or close to) of each month. I love simple, important photography of the everyday. I enjoyed the idea of doing some of the recipes and tutorials but none of them made it into my actual life. I think I will hold on to it with the hope of doing one someday, but would also not hesitate to sell the book back. The letters were interesting and certainly not inauthentic, but they did feel a bit staged. I hate to leave (what is to me) a low rating, especially without any concrete ways I think it could improve, but I'm also going to embrace the fact that I'm not anyone fancy in the publishing world and just go with my gut at the moment. :)

This year I chose a few books that had dates or months as chapters to read through the year. A Year Between Friends is laid out by months and so at the start of each month, I eagerly read those pages. I'm also trying to make things out of the books with the seasons as well although that will likely go to hell when I head to the field in May. So I figured I'd make the review by month as well. So far, I'm loving this simple, yet inspiring book between friends and I look forward to the start of each month so I can read a bit more.

January -- I made the buttermilk scones and the Good luck frittata. The former were just okay...there are other scone recipes that I like far better. That said, I did eat all of them! I think also they would be better with fresh, in season strawberries. I did add a brush of milk on top and sprinkled with raw sugar and I would encourage others to do the same. The frittata, when eaten with a touch of sour cream and ample hot sauce was a good, filling meal that lasted me for about a week. I will be making it again! I also made the spoon oil and treated my spoons, my cutting boards, and my spinning wheel bobbins... I made 1.5 the recipe and shared with my mom and brother. Will make that again as well! I plan to make the tea but didn't have all the ingredients yet...on order and will make when they arrive.

February -- I've gotten behind but plan to try the pasta and the dye project. I will report back when I do. I was not very interested in the chicken soup recipe because I already have a favorite for that.

So field season happened and I didn't continue a monthly read. Instead this July when I went home I finished up the book. It is a truly inspiring book about friendship, loss, birth and the joy of making. There are many projects I hope to try this winter and beyond. Would recommend to any of my craftsy friends out there.
