Don't love the "queer" rep, but it is quite typical of Japanese lit, especially older stuff I guess.
Other than that, lots of friendship and willpower overcomes hardship in this one. Classic One Piece.

Luffy is amazing! Love him so much
I've cried so much while reading this tankōbon, such a beautiful lgbt+ representation. We are indeed a miracle, thank you Oda-sensei, thank you for creating One Piece.
I am flying through these at a rate I haven't flown through comics since I was a kid maybe? Just scrolling and scrolling on the Jump app until suddenly there goes yet another "the adventure continues in the next volume" to let me know it's time to log what I just read.
Love love love the way Luffy picks up and drops new allies along his way--his energy, passion and charisma are so contagious that he's making friends even in the worst prison on earth.

The mission to save Ace barrels forward like a particularly reckless cart with faulty brakes, careening downhill at a speed that suggests either triumph or disaster or, knowing this manga, possibly both at the same time. The volume is fittingly titled A Ray of Hope, but something about that makes me deeply suspicious. Everything is going suspiciously well, which in Oda’s world usually means that somewhere just out of sight, a very large hammer labeled "consequences" is being prepared.
And that, I think, is one of my lingering gripes with this arc. At this point, Luffy’s amassed an entire army of skilled allies, and while it makes sense, given his knack for accidentally making lifelong friends out of former enemies, it’s all happening at an almost suspiciously convenient pace. Someone always seems to know someone, and that connection alone is enough to inspire grand heroic gestures, which is lovely in theory, but also very convenient when you’re trying to storm one of the most impenetrable prisons in existence.
That being said, this volume is an absolute blast. The tension is palpable, the action is fast and chaotic in the best way, and there’s something immensely satisfying about seeing Luffy’s past kindness pay off in unexpected and often ridiculous ways. I particularly enjoyed the spectacle of ex-prisoners rallying behind him, as if Luffy’s accidental charisma is some kind of natural disaster that sweeps up every misfit and rogue in its path.
And of course, let’s not forget the obvious power gap. Luffy may be absurdly strong, but this volume makes it painfully clear that there’s still a long road ahead. He’s not at the top yet, and while it’s easy to forget that when he’s bulldozing through enemies with sheer determination and madness, this arc is a stark reminder that there are far bigger fish in the sea.
