Fascinating and infuriating. I love a good scandal and investigative report. The fact that this is all true left me reeling and at times I had to stop listening because it was too much. I have to admit that this book will make me question, even further, the Catholic Church.

the book containing the articles from the Boston Globe the movie Spotlight was about concerning the Catholic Church cover up of child abuse in America. Extremely interesting, lots of different perspectives, many from inside the house. Somewhat repetitive but that may be due to the sheer amount of cases. Shows the need for law reform but how little the Church gives a single fuck when they consider themselves above the law, considering the role of celibacy as a potential cause when many believe it not be necessary in the first place while the church tried to blame homosexuality.

One of the toughest books to get through, but so important for everyone to read. The over 6000 victims in the U.S. need you to understand what happened.

A few thoughts
a, this has a lot of graphic descriptions of sexual abuse, so proceed with caution. I found myself skipping entire sections because I just couldn't handle the details of some of it.

b, this is not as anti-Catholic as I thought it might be. I think it does a good job of calling out the church for what it did wrong without being totally anti-catholic. The last chapter is a discussion of how the church has tried to move forward, and notes the divide between progressives and conservatives within the church.

c, i think it is incredibly helpful to learn not only the extent of the abuse, but the ways big and small in which it was allowed to be perpetuated. It was also helpful to see all the priests and families who tried to address the abuse.
