Turgenev was clearly a particularly astute observer of the human condition. This novel is so universal I can't imagine a human anywhere on Earth, or during any time period, not being able to relate to it. Fathers and Sons is about relationships, and especially about the relationships between generations. Bazarov and Arkady are young men just done with college who come home with big ideas about the world, they clash with their fathers and uncle who they see as hopelessly old fashioned and irrelevant. Of course the older men disagree and are a little bit alarmed to find themselves no longer on the cutting edge of thought and style.

I listened to this while biking around and so it didn't have my full attention- which is hard with Russian novels when you need to remember names and relationships. Some audiobooks grip me enough that it's fine to bike and listen, but this one just didn't. I did like hearing about 19th century Russian philosophy. Also, can we treat peasants like humans with thoughts and inner lives just as rich as our narrators, please?
