I'm not sure what to think about this one. Certainly I didn't know what I was getting into, it sounds like a horror novel but it's vignettes on trauma. I didn't realize till over half way through that this wasn't a novel though, so that made me scratch my head.

I went in having been told this book was horror, but upon others explaining the premise and plot to me, it didn't feel like the time to read such a heavy topic book. It's one I might revisit in the future though.

"I wonder if 'How'd we get here?' is the wrong question. Maybe the right question is 'How do we get out of here?' Maybe that's the only question that matters."

This is a raw, electrified, bloody and dirty batch of stories that tie together the life of David/Dee, and his family. The author's skill in using every sad and gritty detail to transport you out of your comfort zone right into the cold, hard, ashy muck is enviable. I have to assume it can only be because Morgan Talty writes from experience, people he's known. That said, I hope he was able to do so from a somewhat safe distance, as this is rough, heartbreaking stuff.
This is the kind of writing that makes me want to get back into the craft.
