Reading this took me longer than expected, and I didn't really end up with strong feelings about it either way. I realized quickly I really admired the writing, but the story moves slowly and repetitively, and the longer it dragged on the more I kept wondering whether I missed something(s). I probably did, in the sense that I am not from the US and this was my first time reading a Native American author; perhaps I would have enjoyed this more if I didn't feel so clueless about its context and scenery. In the end this wasn't really for me, but I can see the beauty in it and absolutely imagine others loving this!

I falsely assumed this was going to be a collection of horror short stories. There are elements of the supernatural and horrific things happen, but these aren't really short stories. All of the stories follow the same young man at different periods of his life and in the end a traumatic event explains many elements of the previous stories.
It is well written, but I almost put it down several times because I wanted individual short stories with multiple perspectives, and what I got was an unconventionally arranged bildungsroman.
