I don’t think I’ve ever read a short story collection that was as interconnected as Night of the Living Rez, with each story centering around the same Penobscot family, with the same narrator. We see many dark moments in their lives, but I also felt a lot of hope and love for these characters and their relationships as more of their stories are revealed.
I think this could be a good entry point to short stories for someone who prefers the character development of a novel.

Gifted audio from Libro.fm - I enjoyed the narration and felt each of the characters’ voices were clear.

The stories tie together so well, it felt more like a novel with a non-linear chronology than a short story collection - one of the stories centers on the main character asking the question “How did we get here?” and that’s really what the whole book seeks to answer, with haunting and memorable vignettes. The audiobook narrator was lively and differentiated between the characters well.

Beautifully crafted - I'm still thinking about this book days after finishing.

The characters are so vivid & real, I was looking forward to my reading time just to hangout with them in my mind. I found myself laughing at the little actions that shaped these complicated, flawed beings. But also, I felt all the twists and turns of sadness and anger in my gut. Development occurs with fluidity and grit - and not in the direction you might expect.

I'm amazed these chapters were published at different dates. They weave together so seamlessly!

Hands down one of my favorite novels. I want more from this author. I *need* more.

Morgan Talty’s debut collection is enchanting, with stories that follow the same people and the same places amidst shifts in role and experience along a nonlinear timeline.  On a Penobscot reservation, a young boy gradually grows up, his perspective countered in other stories by that of himself in early adulthood.  Talty’s stories are made of connection and play, survival and addiction, softness, danger.  They explore that which is inherited, that which is inevitable, that which can be changed, that which cannot.  They are often humorous and often sad, and they are brimming with life.
