Don’t let the cover or the marketing fool you, this isn’t a light-hearted beach read. Despite that, I did enjoy the book. An interesting perspective on the humanity of a family dealing with the fallout of generational trauma. You find each member of the Perkins family stuck in their familiar toxic roles - the ones they assumed to survive their dark childhood. Thinking that a great vacation can fix them, they embark on a journey towards Europe, and hopefully towards one another. My main gripe with this book is that the character development felt rushed, and the characters a times fell flat. The narrative voice felt too similar across the different perspectives, which made it hard to really define the characters. An interesting story, but overall lack the depth and emotional heart it tried to achieve.

I don’t think this is a bad book so much as it feels half-baked. The themes, characters, and even basic premise all have whiffs of a promise that never gets delivered. It feels like it should be a fun beach read, but it’s far too heavy for that. It feels like it should be a family drama, but the drama is poorly-handled and never really gets resolved. It’s just all-around rather bland with the occasional glimmer of promise.

I wouldn’t recommend this book because I dislike it, but simply because it doesn’t feel like it does anything.

I really enjoyed this book! I expected it to be a funny summer read based off the description, but it went so much deeper than that. It covered loss, trauma, family dynamics and relationships, but did so with a sense of humor that fit the scene. It was a great story with expansive characters and I’d definitely like to see what else this author has written.
