A lovely little parable about the importance of open Internet.
Kidding, but there were a few brief moments where I would not have been at all surprised if you told me that this was written by Cory Doctorow under a pseudonym. Oh, except this was actually good, so there goes that theory.
Plot wise, this was fairly standard dystopian fiction, with few twists. Don't let that dissuade you. The story thunders along, begging you to read one more chapter even though you know what is coming. Case in point : I finished this in a day. Compelling characters and an interesting world kick it up another notch. And this was self published? I'm bowled over.

Wool centers on a community of people living underground in an apocalyptic setting. Enough time has passed that despite not knowing the history of why they live the way they do, many live relatively normal lives contributing to the silo, winning the lottery (the chance of having a child), and growing old. Some feel there are greater secrets to be discovered and this leads them, willing or not, outside.
After reading this book I really enjoyed the concept and world building and how the story was executed. What kept me from a 5 star rating was that it felt much more about individual story beats than the characters themselves. Which is not to say that the characters are flat. Avoiding spoilers, there are a couple scenes were information is just stated that I wanted explored further. The story takes some incredible turns but it doesn't feel like the rug is being pulled out from under you. Just enough to get your heart racing!
If you are a fan of the show, which is a great adaptation but does make changes, this goes far beyond season one.

This book left me with a deep sorrow. It's the type of book that leaves you in a bit of a slump after reading it. I think it is an amazing short story and it will definitely stick with me.
