I never thought I would laugh as much as I did with a horror graphic novel.

I haven’t explored Monstress, so this is my first Liu title. There were some topics that were personally rather triggering, but that is for me to do a better job researching in the future.

I am definitely interested to pick up book two and see how this world continues to develop. Seeing as my jaw was mostly on the floor throughout with such intense images and twists in the story, I think I need closure at some point.

If you’re looking for a horror graphic novel that will leave you speechless, here you go.

I feel like my initial reaction was very influenced by the art style- I love the details, the color palates, and the shifting light. The story, while it has horror elements, isn’t what I would necessarily classify as horror but maybe a dark fantasy. It ties together a number of experiences that have to do with family, especially the gulf between parents and their children, what they fear and want for them, and how different each person can end up being. There is another book coming later and there is room to have more story, but this volume could also stand on its own. It is slow and confusing until everything is eventually explained, but then it is, and the story can end with the hope for change.
