This was a trip and I'm glad I delayed reading it (unintentionally, I just kept delaying putting it on hold), because now I have a much shorter wait for the next volume. This was such a wild and creative book - the illustrations were beautiful and the plot was amazing. I don't usually love stories that rely so heavily on the premise of parents (or anyone) withholding a major piece of information, but this was such a good book that I'll forgive it (although a story about baby Milly and Billy using powers would be awesome).

Anyway, if you like weird comics, this is a great read. It's creepy and gory and totally weird. Definitely worth a read.

This was such a fun spooky mystery!! I rated it a 4.5 out of 5 because I was confused for most of my first read-through — which was maybe intentional to mimic the confusion of the kids in the book as they try to unravel family secrets? Either way I’m excited to get some more answers in the sequel and had a lot of fun reading this first book.

"It's dangerous not to care for the small things that need you."

Milly and Billy are struggling to keep their restaurant doors open, struggling with pleasing their overbearing mother, and overall just wondering why life doesn't seem to be going right. Told with flashbacks to their parents' time in Hong Kong before immigrating, The Night Eaters tackles diaspora, racism, and family values in a bloody little package.

I have never been happier I picked up a graphic novel with no idea what I was getting into. This was FANTASTIC. I love anything with horror and when I picked up the hardcover of this one day I knew I wanted to try something a little different. This entire piece is stunning, there is so much to look at in the art and pick apart in the way the art ties in with the script - this is just a really well done graphic novel.

I absolutely refuse to give anything away about this, but my jaw dropped multiple times. It's gory, with on page body mutilation and blood, but it all fits in a visceral and disgusting way. I'm so excited to read volume two when it comes out and I'm so happy to have a gorgeous hard copy (with undercover art!) on my graphic novel shelf.

Content warnings: Gore (HEAVY), Blood (heavy), Body horror (heavy), Racism (mild on page), Violence (mild), Vomit (couple scenes)

beautiful and super engaging! i read it in a sitting and had to make myself slow down a bit because i was flipping through the action pages too fast. although it was a fun read, the sibling characters felt like tropes with few glimpses into something deeper. also, i found the justification for the horror sections to be lackluster and more like an excuse than an explanation.

I love Liu/Takeda as a team so so much. This is on-par with Junji Ito with how unhinged it is, I can’t wait for book two. More explanation and story please!!!
